Much like every other season in New Zealand, autumn is a bit of a mixed bag. Every five minutes, the weather switches between a crisp, golden afternoon and a strong, chilly southerly. Not to mention all the rain!
Funnily enough, this changeable season is one of the most critical for your garden’s health. There’s plenty of autumn lawn prep, not to mention a host of other NZ garden care that should be on your autumn garden checklist in NZ. All of it is aimed at preparing, tidying, and getting you set up to handle winter with aplomb.
If you want to survive winter and get your garden to that lush, spring state, then the work starts now. Here is your essential list of garden maintenance tips for autumn (from your local gardening and landscaping experts).
Your Lawn
After a dry Kiwi summer, your lawn might look a bit more toasted than is ideal. Your autumn lawn prep is, therefore, an opportunity for a comeback. Caring for your lawn in autumn requires two key things: aeration and nutrition.
Summer can compact and dry out your lawn with repeated use and evaporation, so we want to address that quickly. First, get in there with a garden fork (or, as we would, a specialised aerator) to poke holes in compacted areas. This allows oxygen and water to reach the roots before the ground becomes waterlogged in winter.
On top of that, consider oversowing to bring your lawn back. Scatter fresh seed over thin patches while the soil is still warm enough for germination. If you’re fertilising, look for something lower in nitrogen (N) and higher in potassium (K) to strengthen the roots rather than encouraging soft, leafy growth that won’t survive a heavy frost.
Pruning & Tidying
As the sap in your trees and bushes starts to retreat, it’s an ideal time to tidy up the summer growth. That said, don’t go too crazy! Pruning the wrong plant or going overboard can invite disease, especially considering how many dead leaves and how much moisture you’ll be dealing with.
We recommend sticking to the three ‘D’s: dead, damaged, or diseased. Give your hedges one last trim at the start of autumn, then just get rid of any spent flowers to keep your garden looking tidy.
Your Soil
Soil is often overlooked, but when it comes to NZ garden care, it’s one of the most vital parts of your backyard ecosystem. All summer, your soil worked hard to produce that grass, those tomatoes, those roses. Now, it’s time to give back.
One of our top tips for autumn lawn prep is to never leave the soil “naked” over winter. It’s a vital part of the lawn care checklist! Heavy rain can wash away topsoil and the nutrients it holds, so consider mulching or spreading a thick layer of high-quality compost over your garden beds. The worms will do the reset of the heavy lifting for you.
Your Edibles
If you’ve been growing vegetables all summer, then it’s unfortunately time to say goodbye to those summer varieties. Sun-scorched tomatoes and zesty basil are both ill-equipped to survive the autumn chill. Instead, bring back the soil and start planting your winter varietals early enough to let them establish before the first hard frost.
For your NZ autumn garden checklist, you’ll see the best results if you plant:
- Broccoli
- Cauliflower
- Kale
- Silverbeet
- Carrots
- Parsnips
- Beetroots
- Garlic
Since we have subtropical weather, planting these varieties in the late autumn is a great way to give them a head start.
Water Management
While it’s not technically gardening, checking out your water management is still a vital part of your garden’s health this autumn. Most NZ gardening guides won’t include this, but we believe autumn is the best time to manage your gutters and downpipes to keep water flowing.
Take a weekend to make sure your gutters and downpipes are clear of fallen leaves. A blocked gutter can create localised flooding in the garden beds you’ve been working so hard to care for, inviting root rot in even your hardiest plants. In other words, a couple of hours spent clearing your gutters of the dead leaves is well worth the effort.
